Detail Description

Abstract

Dropout Risk Prediction is a machine learning-based system designed to identify students who may be at risk of leaving their educational program before completion. The system analyzes factors such as attendance, academic performance, assignment scores, engagement, socioeconomic background, course participation, and previous academic records. Historical student data is used to train machine learning models that classify students according to their potential dropout risk. The system can help educational institutions identify at-risk students early and provide appropriate academic support, counseling, mentoring, and intervention programs.

Objectives

  1. Develop a machine learning model to predict student dropout risk.
  2. Analyze academic, attendance, engagement, and demographic factors.
  3. Identify important factors associated with dropout risk.
  4. Preprocess and prepare student datasets for machine learning.
  5. Train and evaluate multiple classification algorithms.
  6. Predict whether a student is at low, medium, or high dropout risk.
  7. Provide early identification of students requiring additional support.
  8. Help institutions plan targeted student-support interventions.

Existing System

In traditional education systems, student dropout risk is generally identified through manual monitoring of attendance, examination results, academic records, and faculty observations.

Disadvantages:

  1. Manual monitoring is time-consuming.
  2. Difficult to continuously monitor large numbers of students.
  3. Multiple risk factors may not be analyzed together.
  4. Early warning signs can be overlooked.
  5. Historical student data may not be fully utilized.
  6. Identifying students requiring intervention can be inconsistent.

Proposed System

The proposed system uses machine learning to analyze historical student information and predict dropout risk. Student data is cleaned, analyzed, and transformed into meaningful features before being provided to classification algorithms such as Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, KNN, SVM, and Gradient Boosting.

The system can provide a risk prediction through a web interface built using Streamlit or Flask, allowing authorized users to enter student information and receive the predicted dropout-risk category along with relevant analytical information.

Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection – Collect historical student academic, attendance, engagement, and related data.
  2. Data Preprocessing – Handle missing values, duplicates, categorical variables, and inconsistent records.
  3. Exploratory Data Analysis – Analyze relationships between student characteristics and dropout outcomes.
  4. Feature Selection – Identify relevant variables such as attendance, grades, failed subjects, engagement, and academic progress.
  5. Data Splitting – Divide the dataset into training and testing datasets.
  6. Model Training – Train multiple machine learning classification algorithms.
  7. Model Evaluation – Evaluate models using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, confusion matrix, and ROC-AUC.
  8. Model Selection – Select an appropriate model based on evaluation results.
  9. Application Development – Integrate the trained model into a Streamlit/Flask application.
  10. Risk Prediction – Accept student information and generate the predicted dropout-risk category.
  11. Testing – Test the system with different student records.
  12. Deployment – Deploy the application for authorized educational use.
