The Irrigation Requirement Prediction System is a machine learning-based agricultural application designed to predict the irrigation needs of crops based on soil, weather, and crop-related parameters. The system analyzes factors such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, rainfall, crop type, soil type, and water requirements to determine when and how much irrigation may be required. Machine learning models learn from historical agricultural and environmental data to generate irrigation predictions. The system helps farmers optimize water usage, avoid over-irrigation or under-irrigation, improve crop growth, and support sustainable water management.
In the existing system, irrigation decisions are often based on farmer experience, fixed irrigation schedules, manual soil observation, and general weather conditions. Farmers may irrigate fields at predetermined intervals without continuously considering actual soil moisture and changing environmental conditions.
The proposed Irrigation Requirement Prediction System uses machine learning to estimate irrigation requirements based on soil, weather, and crop conditions. Users can provide parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, rainfall, crop type, soil type, and other relevant features.
The trained machine learning model processes these inputs and predicts whether irrigation is required and, depending on the dataset, can estimate the required irrigation level or amount.
Algorithms such as Random Forest, Decision Tree, KNN, Support Vector Machine, Gradient Boosting, or other suitable classification/regression models can be evaluated.
Soil & Weather Data → Data Preprocessing → Feature Selection → ML Model → Irrigation Prediction → Recommendation
Collect historical irrigation data containing soil moisture, rainfall, temperature, humidity, crop type, soil type, and irrigation requirements.
Clean the dataset by handling missing values, duplicate records, inconsistent values, and outliers where appropriate.
Analyze the relationship between irrigation requirements and soil, weather, and crop parameters.
Select important features such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, rainfall, crop type, and soil type.
Divide the dataset into training and testing datasets.
Train suitable machine learning classification or regression models depending on the prediction objective.
Evaluate the model using appropriate metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, MAE, RMSE, or R² Score.
Select the best-performing model based on the evaluation results.
Integrate the trained model into a web or desktop application.
Allow users to enter current soil and weather conditions and generate an irrigation requirement prediction.
Display whether irrigation is required and, if supported by the model, provide the predicted irrigation amount or recommended irrigation level.
