Detail Description

1. Abstract

The Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Chatbot is an AI-powered application that combines information retrieval with Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate relevant, context-aware responses. Instead of relying only on the model's pretrained knowledge, the system retrieves relevant information from external documents or a knowledge base and uses it to formulate answers. Users can ask questions about uploaded PDFs, reports, manuals, or other documents and receive responses grounded in the retrieved content. This project aims to improve answer relevance, provide source references, and make document-based information retrieval more efficient.

2. Objectives

  1. Develop a chatbot that answers questions using external knowledge sources.
  2. Retrieve relevant information from documents and knowledge bases.
  3. Generate context-aware responses using an LLM.
  4. Support document-based question answering.
  5. Provide source references for retrieved information.
  6. Reduce unsupported responses by grounding answers in relevant content.
  7. Build an interactive interface for users to submit queries and receive answers.

3. Existing System

Traditional chatbots rely on predefined rules, fixed responses, or the pretrained knowledge of language models. These approaches may struggle with organization-specific documents, newly updated information, and questions requiring details from private knowledge bases.

Disadvantages

  1. Rule-based chatbots have limited conversational flexibility.
  2. LLMs may generate incorrect or unsupported information.
  3. Models may not know the latest or private document content.
  4. Searching large document collections manually is time-consuming.
  5. Responses may lack traceable source references.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses a Retrieval-Augmented Generation architecture to answer user questions using relevant external information. Documents are extracted, divided into smaller text chunks, converted into vector embeddings, and stored in a vector database. When a user submits a question, the system retrieves the most relevant chunks using semantic similarity search. The retrieved context is provided to an LLM, which generates an answer based on the available information. The chatbot can display source documents or relevant passages to help users verify the responses.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Document Collection: Gather PDFs, text files, manuals, reports, or other relevant knowledge sources.
  2. Document Processing: Extract text from the documents and clean the content.
  3. Text Chunking: Divide long documents into smaller, overlapping text segments.
  4. Embedding Generation: Convert text chunks into vector representations using an embedding model.
  5. Vector Database Setup: Store embeddings and associated text in a vector database such as FAISS or Chroma.
  6. Query Processing: Accept user questions and convert them into embeddings.
  7. Context Retrieval: Retrieve the most relevant document chunks using similarity search.
  8. Response Generation: Pass the question and retrieved context to an LLM to generate a grounded response.
  9. Chatbot Interface: Build a user interface using Streamlit or Flask.
  10. Testing and Evaluation: Evaluate retrieval relevance, answer accuracy, response time, and source attribution.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Programming Language: Python
  2. LLM Framework: LangChain or LlamaIndex
  3. Language Models: OpenAI models or compatible open-source LLMs
  4. Embedding Models: Sentence Transformers or an API-based embedding model
  5. Vector Database: FAISS, Chroma, or Pinecone
  6. Document Processing: PyPDF, PyMuPDF, or python-docx
  7. Web Framework: Streamlit or Flask
  8. Development Environment: VS Code, Jupyter Notebook, or Google Colab
  9. Operating System: Windows, Linux, or macOS

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Core i3 or equivalent and above
  2. RAM: Minimum 8 GB recommended
  3. Storage: At least 10 GB of available space
  4. Internet Connection: Required for hosted LLM and embedding APIs
  5. GPU: Optional when using hosted models; a suitable GPU may be needed for locally running larger models

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Provides answers grounded in external documents.
  2. Enables question answering over custom knowledge bases.
  3. Makes large document collections easier to search.
  4. Can provide source references for answer verification.
  5. Supports updates to the knowledge base without retraining the LLM.
  6. Can be adapted for education, customer support, research, and enterprise applications.
  7. Demonstrates practical use of LLMs, embeddings, vector databases, and semantic search.
