1. Abstract

Movie databases contain large volumes of information related to films, including ratings, revenue, genre, and audience votes. Analyzing such data helps understand movie performance, audience preferences, and industry trends. Visualization tools play an important role in converting raw movie data into meaningful insights.

This project focuses on analysing the IMDb Movie Dataset using Power BI, a powerful business intelligence and data visualization tool. The dataset is imported from a CSV file and contains information such as movie titles, genres, ratings, revenue, runtime, votes, and release year.

The data is first explored and cleaned by removing unnecessary columns such as actor lists and movie descriptions. Missing values are handled to avoid errors in visualization and analysis. After preprocessing the dataset, various Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and interactive visualizations are created to analyse movie performance based on ratings, votes, genres, revenue, and release years.

The project demonstrates how Power BI can be used for data exploration and visual storytelling, enabling users to identify trends in the film industry and evaluate movie success factors.

The proposed system uses Power BI to analyse and visualize the IMDb Movie Dataset.

In this system:

  1. The dataset is imported from a CSV file into Power BI.
  2. Data is examined in Data View to understand its structure.
  3. Unnecessary columns such as actors and descriptions are removed.
  4. Missing values in columns such as revenue and metascore are handled appropriately.
  5. Important attributes such as rating, votes, genre, runtime, and revenue are retained for analysis.
  6. Interactive visualizations and KPIs are created to represent movie performance.

The dashboard allows users to:

  1. Identify top-rated movies
  2. Analyse movie performance by genre

5. Implementation Procedure

The implementation of this project involves the following steps:

Step 1: Data Collection

Obtain the IMDb Movie Dataset in CSV format, containing movie-related information such as title, genre, rating, revenue, and votes.

Step 2: Data Import

Import the dataset into Power BI Desktop using the Get Data → CSV option.

Step 3: Data Exploration

View the dataset in Data View to understand the available columns and their contents.

Step 4: Data Cleaning

Perform the following data preparation tasks:

  1. Remove unnecessary columns such as actors and movie descriptions.
  2. Identify and handle missing values in revenue and metascore fields.
  3. Ensure correct data types for numerical columns such as ratings and votes.
