1. Abstract

Healthcare institutions generate a large amount of patient data every day, including admission details, test results, and discharge information. Managing and analysing this data efficiently is essential for improving hospital operations and providing better patient care. Traditional data management systems often store information in multiple files, making it difficult to access and analyse quickly.

This project focuses on developing a Patient Information Dashboard using Power BI to visualize and manage hospital patient data. The dashboard allows doctors and nurses to quickly access patient information such as admission number, admission date, discharge date, age, test results, and medical notes.

The project uses CSV datasets containing master patient data and admission records, which are imported into Power BI using the Import Mode. Data transformation and cleaning are performed using the Power Query Editor, and relationships between tables are created in the Model View. Finally, an interactive dashboard is built in the Report View, allowing healthcare staff to click on a patient's admission number to view detailed medical information.

This project demonstrates how Power BI can be used for healthcare data analysis and visualization, enabling quick decision-making and improved hospital data management.


2. Objectives

The main objectives of this project are:

  3. To study the difference between Import Mode and Direct Query Mode in Power BI.
  4. To perform data cleaning and transformation using Power Query Editor.
  5. To understand the concept of Fact Tables and Dimension Tables.

  8. To enable doctors and nurses to quickly access patient records and medical details.


3. Existing System

In many hospitals, patient data is stored in separate spreadsheets or manual records, making it difficult to quickly retrieve specific information.

Existing systems typically rely on:

Limitations of Existing Systems

  1. Difficulty in quickly accessing patient records.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system develops an interactive Patient Information Dashboard using Power BI.

In this system:

  1. Patient data is collected in CSV format containing master data and admission records.
  2. Data is imported into Power BI using the Import Mode.
  3. The Power Query Editor is used for data cleaning and transformation.
  4. Relationships between tables are created using primary and foreign keys such as Admission Number.
  5. The dashboard is designed to show:
  6. Patient admission number
  7. Admission date
  8. Discharge date
  9. Patient age
  10. Medical test results
  11. Doctor’s notes
  12. Doctors or nurses can click on an admission number to view detailed patient information.

This system provides a clear, interactive, and easy-to-use hospital data visualization platform.

5. Implementation Procedure

The implementation of this project involves the following steps:

Step 1: Data Collection

Collect patient datasets in CSV format, including:

  1. Master Data (dimension table)
  2. Admission Data (fact table)

Step 2: Data Import

Import the datasets into Power BI using the Import Mode.

Step 3: Data Exploration

View the datasets in the Data View to understand their structure and contents.

Step 4: Data Transformation

Use Power Query Editor to:

  1. Clean the data
  2. Correct data types
  3. Remove inconsistencies
  4. Prepare data for analysis

Step 5: Relationship Creation

Use Model View to create relationships between tables using Admission Number as the key.

Step 6: Data Modeling

Identify:
