Detail Description

1. Abstract

Speech Emotion Recognition is an artificial intelligence and machine learning project that identifies human emotions from speech signals. The system analyzes voice recordings by extracting acoustic features such as pitch, tone, energy, and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs). Using machine learning or deep learning algorithms, it classifies speech into emotional categories such as happy, sad, angry, neutral, fearful, and surprised. This project can be used in customer service, healthcare support applications, virtual assistants, and human-computer interaction to improve understanding of emotional communication.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop an AI-based system for recognizing emotions from speech.
  2. To extract meaningful audio features from voice recordings.
  3. To classify speech into different emotional categories.
  4. To explore machine learning and deep learning techniques for emotion detection.
  5. To provide accurate and efficient speech emotion predictions.
  6. To improve human-computer interaction through emotion-aware applications.

3. Existing System

Traditional speech analysis systems primarily focus on speech-to-text conversion and voice command recognition rather than identifying the speaker's emotional state. Some existing emotion recognition approaches rely on manually designed acoustic features and conventional machine learning algorithms.

Disadvantages

  1. Limited ability to recognize complex emotional variations.
  2. Performance may decrease with background noise.
  3. Accuracy depends on audio quality and dataset diversity.
  4. Traditional approaches may struggle with differences in accents and speaking styles.
  5. Manual feature engineering can require significant effort.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses audio signal processing and machine learning or deep learning techniques to recognize emotions from speech recordings. The input audio is preprocessed to reduce noise and normalize the signal. Relevant features, including MFCCs, pitch, and energy, are extracted and provided to a trained classification model. The model predicts the emotion associated with the speech and displays the result through a simple user interface.

Key Features

  1. Upload or record speech audio.
  2. Audio preprocessing and feature extraction.
  3. Emotion classification using a trained model.
  4. Support for multiple emotional categories.
  5. Display of predicted emotion and confidence score, where supported by the model.
  6. User-friendly interface for testing audio samples.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection: Collect labeled emotional speech recordings from datasets such as RAVDESS, CREMA-D, or TESS, subject to their usage terms.
  2. Audio Preprocessing: Load audio files, standardize the sampling rate, trim silence if appropriate, and normalize audio levels.
  3. Feature Extraction: Extract MFCCs, chroma features, pitch, spectral characteristics, and energy using audio processing libraries.
  4. Dataset Preparation: Assign emotion labels, encode categories, and split the dataset into training, validation, and testing sets.
  5. Model Training: Train a suitable algorithm, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, CNN, or LSTM, based on the selected features and dataset.
  6. Model Evaluation: Evaluate performance using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a confusion matrix.
  7. Application Development: Build a user interface using Flask or Streamlit to upload audio and display predictions.
  8. Testing and Deployment: Test the application with different audio samples and deploy it in a suitable local or cloud environment.
