Detail Description

1. Abstract

Speech Emotion Recognition is an AI-based system that identifies human emotions from voice recordings by analyzing speech patterns, tone, pitch, energy, and other acoustic features. The system uses machine learning or deep learning techniques to classify emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and neutrality. It processes audio input, extracts relevant features, and predicts the emotion expressed by the speaker. This project can be applied in customer service, mental health support tools, virtual assistants, call-center analytics, and human-computer interaction.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop an AI-based system that recognizes emotions from speech.
  2. To extract important acoustic features from voice recordings.
  3. To classify emotions such as happy, sad, angry, fearful, and neutral.
  4. To improve human-computer interaction through emotion-aware applications.
  5. To evaluate the performance of speech emotion classification models.
  6. To provide quick and automated emotion predictions from audio input.

3. Existing System

Traditional emotion recognition methods rely on manual observation, facial expressions, or text-based sentiment analysis. Human-based evaluation can be subjective and time-consuming, while text-based systems may fail to identify emotions conveyed through vocal tone and pitch. Basic speech processing systems may also struggle with variations in accents, speaking styles, background noise, and recording quality.

Limitations of the Existing System

  1. Manual emotion identification can be inconsistent.
  2. Text-only analysis may miss emotions conveyed by voice.
  3. Background noise can reduce recognition accuracy.
  4. Different accents and speaking styles create classification challenges.
  5. Real-time emotion detection may be limited.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses machine learning or deep learning techniques to identify emotions directly from speech recordings. The audio input is preprocessed to reduce noise and standardize the signal. Acoustic features such as Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), pitch, and energy are extracted and supplied to a trained classification model. The model predicts the most likely emotion and displays the result through a user-friendly interface.

Key Features

  1. Audio file upload and speech recording.
  2. Audio preprocessing and feature extraction.
  3. AI-based emotion classification.
  4. Detection of multiple emotion categories.
  5. Display of predicted emotion and confidence score, when supported by the model.
  6. User-friendly interface for testing speech samples.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection: Collect labeled speech recordings from a suitable dataset, such as RAVDESS or CREMA-D.
  2. Audio Preprocessing: Load audio files, standardize the sampling rate, handle silence where appropriate, and reduce noise if required.
  3. Feature Extraction: Extract acoustic features such as MFCCs, chroma, spectral features, pitch, and energy.
  4. Dataset Preparation: Assign emotion labels, organize the extracted features, and divide the dataset into training, validation, and testing sets.
  5. Model Training: Train a machine learning model, such as Support Vector Machine or Random Forest, or a deep learning model such as CNN or LSTM.
  6. Model Evaluation: Evaluate the model using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a confusion matrix.
  7. Application Development: Create an interface using Flask, Streamlit, or another suitable framework.
  8. Prediction: Allow users to upload or record audio and display the predicted emotion.
  9. Testing: Test the system with different speakers, recording conditions, and audio samples.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Programming Language: Python
  2. Libraries: Librosa, NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn
  3. Deep Learning Framework: TensorFlow/Keras or PyTorch
  4. Audio Processing: SoundFile, SciPy
  5. Visualization: Matplotlib, Seaborn
  6. Web Framework: Flask or Streamlit
  7. Development Environment: Visual Studio Code, Jupyter Notebook, or Google Colab
  8. Operating System: Windows, Linux, or macOS

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Core i3 or equivalent and above
  2. RAM: Minimum 4 GB; 8 GB or more recommended
  3. Storage: At least 2 GB of free space, depending on dataset size
  4. Microphone: Required for live speech recording
  5. Speakers or Headphones: For audio playback and testing
  6. GPU: Optional; recommended for training larger deep learning models

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Automatically identifies emotions from voice recordings.
  2. Reduces the need for manual emotion assessment.
  3. Captures vocal cues that text-based systems may overlook.
  4. Supports integration with voice assistants and customer-support applications.
  5. Can process prerecorded audio and, with suitable implementation, live speech.
  6. Provides a foundation for emotion-aware human-computer interaction.
  7. Can be extended to support additional emotion categories and languages.
