Air-Quality Forecasting using LSTM is a deep learning project designed to predict future air-quality conditions by analyzing historical environmental and air-pollution data. Air quality is influenced by pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO₂, SO₂, CO, and O₃, along with temperature, humidity, wind speed, and other meteorological factors. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks are well suited for this problem because they can learn temporal dependencies and patterns from sequential data. The proposed system can forecast future pollutant concentrations or an Air Quality Index (AQI), supporting environmental monitoring, public awareness, and pollution-management decisions.
Traditional air-quality monitoring systems primarily depend on air-quality monitoring stations, historical measurements, statistical techniques, and manually analyzed environmental reports. Some systems provide current AQI values but have limited forecasting capabilities.
The proposed system uses an LSTM neural network to learn temporal patterns from historical air-quality and meteorological data and forecast future conditions.
Workflow:
Historical Air-Quality Data → Preprocessing → Feature Engineering → Time-Series Sequence Creation → LSTM Model → Future Prediction → AQI/Air-Quality Visualization
Possible input features:
The system can predict:
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect historical air-quality and meteorological data containing pollutant measurements and timestamps.
Step 2 – Data Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Feature Engineering
Create useful time-series features such as:
Step 5 – Sequence Creation
Convert the time-series data into sequences suitable for LSTM training.
For example:
Previous 24 hours → LSTM → Next-hour AQI prediction
The sequence length can be adjusted according to the dataset and forecasting requirement.
Step 6 – LSTM Model Development
Build an LSTM network containing suitable LSTM layers, dropout layers, and output layers. The final architecture should be selected based on the dataset and forecasting objective.
Step 7 – Model Training
Train the model using chronological training and validation data. Avoid random splitting for time-series forecasting because it can cause future information to leak into training.
Step 8 – Model Evaluation
For continuous pollutant/AQI prediction, evaluate using:
If AQI categories are predicted, use:
Step 9 – Future Air-Quality Prediction
Provide the latest available environmental observations to the trained LSTM model and generate future pollutant or AQI predictions.
Step 10 – Visualization and Deployment
Develop a Streamlit or Flask application displaying:
