Satellite-Based Land-Cover Classification is an AI and machine learning project that automatically identifies and categorizes different types of land surfaces from satellite imagery. The system analyzes multispectral satellite images and extracts visual and spectral information such as reflectance values, vegetation patterns, texture, and color characteristics. Machine learning or deep learning models can then classify land into categories such as forest, agricultural land, water bodies, urban areas, barren land, grassland, and built-up areas. The system can support environmental monitoring, urban planning, agriculture, forestry, disaster management, and geographic information system (GIS) applications.
Traditional land-cover classification is commonly performed through manual interpretation of satellite imagery, expert analysis, GIS tools, and predefined classification techniques. Experts examine satellite images based on color, texture, spectral information, and geographical knowledge to identify different land-cover categories.
The proposed system uses machine learning/deep learning and satellite image processing to automatically classify land-cover categories.
Workflow:
Satellite Image → Preprocessing → Feature Extraction → Model Prediction → Land-Cover Classification → Visualization
Possible land-cover classes include:
Possible algorithms:
The exact classes and model should depend on the selected satellite dataset.
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect labeled satellite imagery from suitable remote-sensing datasets such as Sentinel-2, Landsat, EuroSAT, or other land-cover datasets.
Step 2 – Image Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Feature Extraction
Extract relevant spectral, spatial, texture, or image features. Vegetation indices such as NDVI can also be used when appropriate.
Step 5 – Model Development
Train classification models such as Random Forest, SVM, XGBoost, or CNN-based architectures.
Step 6 – Model Training
Train the selected model using labeled satellite images and validate it using an appropriate validation strategy.
Step 7 – Model Evaluation
Evaluate using:
Step 8 – Prediction
Allow the user to upload a satellite image and generate the predicted land-cover category or classified land-cover map.
Step 9 – Visualization
Display the original satellite image, predicted class, confidence score where supported, and classification results.
Step 10 – Deployment
Deploy the system using Streamlit or Flask with a simple web interface.
