Pneumonia Detection from Chest X-rays is an AI-based medical image classification project that uses deep learning and computer vision to identify pneumonia-related patterns in chest X-ray images. The system preprocesses X-ray images, extracts visual features, and applies CNN or transfer-learning models to classify images into dataset-defined categories such as Pneumonia and Normal. The system can assist with preliminary image analysis and medical AI research by providing rapid and consistent predictions. It should be used as a decision-support/research tool and not as a replacement for professional medical diagnosis.
Traditional pneumonia assessment involves radiologists and healthcare professionals examining chest X-rays along with patient symptoms, clinical history, and other diagnostic information.
The proposed system uses CNN-based deep learning and transfer learning to analyze chest X-ray images and classify them according to the selected dataset.
Workflow:
Chest X-ray → Preprocessing → Normalization → Feature Extraction → CNN/Transfer Learning → Classification → Prediction
Possible models:
Typical preprocessing:
The output may be Normal / Pneumonia, or more detailed categories if supported by the dataset.
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect a labeled chest X-ray dataset containing appropriate pneumonia and normal images.
Step 2 – Image Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Feature Extraction
Use CNN layers or pretrained models to automatically learn visual features such as edges, textures, patterns, and radiographic characteristics.
Step 5 – Model Development
Build a CNN model or apply transfer learning using architectures such as ResNet, VGG, DenseNet, MobileNet, or EfficientNet.
Step 6 – Model Training
Train the model on the labeled X-ray dataset and validate it using a separate validation set.
Step 7 – Model Evaluation
Evaluate the model using:
For medical classification, sensitivity and specificity are particularly important, rather than relying only on accuracy.
Step 8 – Prediction
Allow the user to upload a chest X-ray and return the predicted class with an appropriate probability/confidence score.
Step 9 – Visualization
Display:
Step 10 – Deployment
Deploy the trained model using Streamlit or Flask.
