Cost-Sensitive Learning for Imbalanced Medical Data is a machine learning project designed to improve the classification of medical conditions when the dataset contains significantly fewer positive cases than negative cases. In medical diagnosis, imbalanced datasets can cause traditional machine learning models to overlook rare but clinically important conditions. The proposed system uses cost-sensitive learning techniques to assign different penalties to false negatives and false positives, helping the model account for the consequences of different classification errors. Algorithms such as Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and XGBoost can be trained using class weights or cost-sensitive decision thresholds. The system evaluates model performance using precision, recall, F1-score, PR-AUC, ROC-AUC, and confusion matrices. An interactive dashboard presents prediction results, class distribution, and performance comparisons. The project aims to support more effective detection of minority-class medical cases while balancing different error costs. The system is intended for research and educational purposes and does not replace professional medical diagnosis.
Traditional medical classification systems often use standard machine learning algorithms trained on datasets in which one class is much more common than the other. These models may prioritize overall accuracy, which can produce misleading results when rare medical conditions are difficult to detect.
The proposed system applies cost-sensitive learning to improve the classification of imbalanced medical data. It assigns higher penalties to clinically important errors, such as false negatives when missing a condition is considered more costly than generating a false alarm.
The system collects medical data, preprocesses the features, analyzes class distribution, and trains classification models. Class weights or custom misclassification costs are incorporated during training, while decision thresholds can be adjusted using validation data. Model performance is compared against conventional approaches using minority-class recall, precision, F1-score, PR-AUC, and confusion matrices.
An interactive dashboard displays prediction results, model comparisons, class distributions, and error statistics. The cost settings should be selected carefully with appropriate clinical input, because reducing false negatives may increase false positives. The resulting predictions are intended to support research and clinical review rather than provide standalone diagnoses.
