Crop and Fertilizer Recommendation Using Explainable Machine Learning is an intelligent agriculture project that helps farmers select suitable crops and fertilizers based on soil characteristics and environmental conditions. The system analyzes parameters such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, soil pH, temperature, humidity, and rainfall to recommend appropriate crops and fertilizers. Machine learning algorithms, such as Random Forest and Decision Tree, are used to generate recommendations from historical agricultural datasets. Explainable AI techniques, such as SHAP and LIME, help explain why a particular crop or fertilizer is recommended by identifying the most influential input features. The proposed system provides an interactive dashboard for entering agricultural parameters and displaying recommendations with understandable explanations. This approach aims to improve farming decisions, optimize fertilizer usage, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Traditional crop and fertilizer selection often depends on farmers' experience, general agricultural guidelines, and manual soil testing. Some existing recommendation systems use machine learning to predict suitable crops or fertilizers, but they may provide recommendations without explaining how the input features influence the result.
The proposed system combines machine learning with Explainable AI to provide crop and fertilizer recommendations based on agricultural input parameters. Users enter soil nutrient values, pH, temperature, humidity, and rainfall. The trained model predicts suitable crops and recommends fertilizers based on available fertilizer data or a separately trained recommendation model.
SHAP or LIME is used to explain the model's predictions by highlighting the input features that influenced the recommendation. The application displays the recommended crop, fertilizer information, and relevant explanations through an interactive dashboard.
1. Dataset Collection: Obtain crop recommendation and fertilizer datasets from reliable agricultural sources or public datasets. Include soil nutrients, pH, temperature, humidity, rainfall, crop labels, and fertilizer information where available.
2. Data Preprocessing: Handle missing values, remove duplicate records, encode categorical variables, and normalize numerical features if required.
3. Exploratory Data Analysis: Analyze relationships between soil nutrients, weather conditions, crops, and fertilizer requirements using statistical summaries and visualizations.
4. Feature Selection: Select relevant features such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, temperature, humidity, and rainfall.
5. Crop Model Development: Train machine learning algorithms such as Random Forest, Decision Tree, or XGBoost to recommend suitable crops.
6. Fertilizer Recommendation Module: Develop a separate model or rule-based recommendation engine using soil nutrient deficiencies, crop requirements, and fertilizer composition data.
7. Model Evaluation: Evaluate crop classification using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Evaluate fertilizer recommendations using suitable classification or ranking metrics.
8. Explainable AI Integration: Apply SHAP or LIME to explain model predictions and identify the features that contribute to each recommendation.
9. Backend Development: Use Python with Flask or Streamlit to connect the trained models and recommendation logic to the application.
10. Dashboard Development: Create a user interface for entering soil and weather parameters and displaying crop recommendations, fertilizer suggestions, and explanation charts.
11. Testing: Test the system with unseen samples and different soil conditions to verify recommendation quality and explanation consistency.
12. Deployment: Deploy the application locally or on a suitable cloud platform for demonstration and further evaluation.
