Detail Description

1. Abstract

Digital Twin for Autonomous Vehicle Networks is an intelligent transportation project that creates a virtual representation of autonomous vehicles, road infrastructure, and vehicle communication networks. The system uses simulated vehicle data, traffic conditions, sensor readings, and network communication parameters to monitor and analyze vehicle behavior in a digital environment. By synchronizing the virtual model with simulated or real-time data, the digital twin can visualize traffic flow, evaluate vehicle performance, identify potential communication issues, and test different driving or traffic scenarios. A dashboard presents vehicle positions, network status, traffic conditions, and simulation results. The project supports safer testing, performance analysis, and optimization of autonomous vehicle networks before changes are applied to physical systems.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop a virtual representation of autonomous vehicles and their surrounding environment.
  2. To simulate vehicle movement and traffic conditions.
  3. To monitor vehicle positions, speeds, and communication status.
  4. To analyze vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication.
  5. To identify potential network delays and connectivity issues.
  6. To evaluate different autonomous driving and traffic scenarios.
  7. To visualize digital twin data through an interactive dashboard.
  8. To support simulation-based testing and system optimization.

3. Existing System

Traditional autonomous vehicle testing often relies on physical test vehicles, standalone simulations, or separate traffic and communication analysis tools. These approaches can be useful but may not provide an integrated virtual environment that connects vehicle behavior, road infrastructure, and network performance.

Disadvantages:

  1. Physical vehicle testing can be expensive and time-consuming.
  2. Separate tools may make integrated analysis difficult.
  3. Limited synchronization between vehicle states and network information.
  4. Difficulties testing rare or dangerous scenarios in physical environments.
  5. Limited real-time visualization of combined traffic and network performance.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system creates a digital twin of an autonomous vehicle network by combining a virtual road environment, simulated vehicles, communication parameters, and a monitoring dashboard. Vehicle positions, speeds, traffic conditions, and network events are updated from the simulation or an available data source. The system allows users to test different traffic scenarios, observe communication performance, and evaluate the effects of changes in vehicle movement or network conditions.

Key Features:

  1. Virtual representation of vehicles and road infrastructure.
  2. Vehicle position and speed monitoring.
  3. Traffic flow simulation.
  4. V2V and V2I communication simulation.
  5. Network latency and packet-delivery monitoring.
  6. Scenario testing for congestion and connectivity problems.
  7. Interactive digital twin dashboard.
  8. Historical data visualization and performance reports.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Requirement Analysis: Define the autonomous vehicle network, road layout, vehicle types, and performance indicators to be monitored.
  2. Simulation Environment Setup: Create a virtual road network using a simulator such as SUMO and configure vehicle routes, speeds, traffic lights, and traffic demand.
  3. Vehicle Data Generation: Collect simulated vehicle positions, speed, acceleration, and movement data at regular intervals.
  4. Network Simulation: Use a network simulator or a simplified communication model to represent V2V and V2I message exchanges, latency, packet loss, and connectivity.
  5. Digital Twin Development: Create a virtual representation of the road environment and vehicles, updating the displayed vehicle states using simulation data.
  6. Data Integration: Connect vehicle and network data through an application interface or data-processing module.
  7. Monitoring and Analysis: Calculate indicators such as vehicle speed, traffic density, communication latency, and packet-delivery ratio.
  8. Dashboard Development: Build a dashboard to display vehicle locations, road conditions, network performance, and system alerts.
  9. Scenario Testing: Simulate congestion, communication delays, vehicle-density changes, or connectivity interruptions and observe their effects.
  10. Evaluation: Compare scenarios using traffic efficiency, communication performance, data synchronization, and simulation response time.
