Detail Description

1. Abstract

Emergency Vehicle Detection and Signal Priority is an AI-based intelligent transportation project designed to identify emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles and support faster movement through traffic intersections. The system uses computer vision and deep learning techniques to detect and classify emergency vehicles from camera feeds or recorded videos. When an emergency vehicle is identified, a signal-priority module can recommend or simulate adjustments to traffic signal timings, helping reduce delays at intersections. A dashboard displays detected vehicles, signal status, and priority events. The system aims to support emergency response and intelligent traffic management while maintaining safe signal transitions.

2. Objectives

  1. To detect ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles using computer vision.
  2. To classify emergency vehicles from images and video streams.
  3. To identify emergency vehicles approaching monitored intersections.
  4. To simulate or recommend traffic signal priority based on vehicle detection.
  5. To reduce unnecessary delays for emergency vehicles.
  6. To monitor detection events and signal status through a dashboard.
  7. To incorporate safety constraints into signal-priority decisions.

3. Existing System

Traditional traffic signals generally follow fixed timing schedules or conventional traffic-responsive rules. Emergency vehicles may rely on sirens, manual intervention, or specialized infrastructure to receive priority at intersections. These approaches may not be consistently available at every location.

Disadvantages:

  1. Emergency vehicles may experience delays at busy intersections.
  2. Fixed signal timings do not automatically respond to detected emergencies.
  3. Manual traffic control can be difficult during heavy congestion.
  4. Some systems require specialized roadside equipment.
  5. Limited integration of visual detection and adaptive signal control.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system combines AI-based emergency vehicle detection with a traffic signal-priority module. A camera feed is processed using a deep learning model to identify emergency vehicles. The system then evaluates the detection result and triggers a priority request or simulated signal adjustment. A monitoring dashboard records detection events and displays the current signal phase.

Key Features:

  1. Ambulance, fire engine, and police vehicle detection.
  2. Real-time or recorded-video analysis.
  3. Vehicle classification with bounding boxes and confidence scores.
  4. Configurable signal-priority logic.
  5. Traffic signal simulation and event logging.
  6. Dashboard for emergency detection and signal status.
  7. Optional vehicle tracking and approach-direction estimation.
  8. Safety checks to prevent conflicting green signals.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Data Collection: Obtain emergency vehicle images and videos from suitable public datasets or collect sample footage for demonstration.
  2. Data Preprocessing: Resize images, normalize input data, and prepare labelled examples for emergency vehicle classes.
  3. Model Selection: Use a pretrained YOLO model or fine-tune an object detection model on a dataset containing ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles.
  4. Emergency Vehicle Detection: Process each video frame and identify emergency vehicles with their class labels and confidence scores.
  5. Vehicle Tracking: Optionally use a tracking algorithm to follow detected vehicles across frames and reduce duplicate detection events.
  6. Approach Identification: Determine whether a detected vehicle is approaching a monitored intersection using camera-region definitions, tracking, or additional location information.
  7. Priority Decision: Apply configurable rules to decide when to request signal priority, considering detection confidence, vehicle approach, and intersection status.
  8. Signal Control Simulation: Use a traffic simulator or a software-based signal controller to demonstrate priority handling, including safe phase transitions and clearance intervals.
  9. Dashboard Development: Create a dashboard showing detected emergency vehicles, confidence scores, signal phases, priority requests, and event history.
  10. Testing and Evaluation: Evaluate detection precision, recall, false alarms, response time, and simulated emergency-vehicle delay against a baseline without priority control.
