Detail Description

1. Abstract

Speech Emotion Recognition is an artificial intelligence system that identifies human emotions from voice recordings by analyzing vocal characteristics such as pitch, tone, rhythm, energy, and acoustic features. The system uses machine learning and deep learning algorithms to classify emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and neutrality. Audio recordings are preprocessed, and relevant features are extracted to train a classification model. The trained model predicts the most likely emotion associated with an audio sample. This project can be applied in virtual assistants, customer service, call-center analytics, educational tools, and human-computer interaction.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop an AI-based system for recognizing emotions from speech.
  2. To extract meaningful acoustic features from voice recordings.
  3. To classify speech into predefined emotion categories.
  4. To apply machine learning and deep learning techniques for emotion detection.
  5. To evaluate model performance using suitable classification metrics.
  6. To support emotion-aware applications and improve human-computer interaction.

3. Existing System

Traditional emotion recognition relies on human observation, manual listening, or text-based sentiment analysis. These approaches can be subjective, time-consuming, and unable to capture emotional information conveyed through vocal tone and pitch. Basic speech analysis systems may also struggle with background noise, different accents, speaking styles, and variations in recording quality.

Disadvantages of the Existing System

  1. Manual emotion identification requires time and effort.
  2. Text-based analysis may miss vocal emotional cues.
  3. Background noise can reduce recognition accuracy.
  4. Different accents and speaking styles can affect predictions.
  5. Traditional methods may not perform well on large audio datasets.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses machine learning or deep learning to identify emotions from audio recordings automatically. The input audio is preprocessed, and features such as Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), pitch, energy, and spectral characteristics are extracted. These features are supplied to a trained classification model, which predicts the most likely emotion. The result is displayed through a user-friendly interface.

Key Features

  1. Upload audio files for emotion analysis.
  2. Record speech using a microphone, if supported.
  3. Extract acoustic features from speech recordings.
  4. Classify emotions such as happy, sad, angry, fearful, and neutral.
  5. Display the predicted emotion and optional confidence score.
  6. Provide a simple interface for testing different audio samples.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection: Collect labeled speech recordings from datasets such as RAVDESS or CREMA-D.
  2. Audio Preprocessing: Load recordings, standardize sampling rates, handle silence where appropriate, and prepare audio samples for analysis.
  3. Feature Extraction: Extract MFCCs, chroma features, pitch, energy, and spectral characteristics using Librosa or similar libraries.
  4. Dataset Preparation: Assign emotion labels and split the dataset into training, validation, and testing sets.
  5. Model Selection: Choose a suitable algorithm, such as Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, CNN, or LSTM.
  6. Model Training: Train the selected model using labeled audio features.
  7. Model Evaluation: Evaluate the model using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a confusion matrix.
  8. Application Development: Build a user interface using Flask or Streamlit.
  9. Emotion Prediction: Allow users to upload or record speech and display the predicted emotion.
  10. Testing: Test the application using different speakers, speech samples, and recording conditions.

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Automatically recognizes emotions from voice recordings.
  2. Reduces the need for manual emotion assessment.
  3. Captures vocal cues that text-based systems may overlook.
  4. Supports integration with virtual assistants and customer-service applications.
  5. Can process prerecorded audio and be extended for live speech analysis.
  6. Supports research in speech processing and human-computer interaction.
  7. Can be extended to include additional emotion categories and languages.
