Detail Description

1. Abstract

Traffic Density Estimation and Signal Control is an AI-based intelligent transportation project designed to estimate vehicle density on roads and optimize traffic signal timings. The system uses computer vision and image processing techniques to analyze live or recorded traffic video, detect vehicles, and estimate congestion levels. Based on the detected traffic density, the system adjusts signal timings to improve traffic flow and reduce unnecessary waiting times. A monitoring dashboard displays vehicle counts, congestion levels, and signal status, supporting smarter traffic management and more efficient transportation.

2. Objectives

  1. To estimate traffic density using computer vision techniques.
  2. To detect and count vehicles from traffic images or video streams.
  3. To classify traffic conditions as low, medium, or high congestion.
  4. To adjust traffic signal timings based on vehicle density.
  5. To reduce unnecessary waiting time at intersections.
  6. To monitor traffic conditions through a dashboard.
  7. To improve traffic flow using intelligent signal-control strategies.

3. Existing System

Traditional traffic signals generally operate using fixed timing schedules, regardless of the number of vehicles waiting at each intersection. Some intersections use sensors, but these systems may have limited detection capabilities or fail to coordinate effectively with changing traffic conditions.

Disadvantages:

  1. Fixed signal timings may not reflect actual traffic density.
  2. Vehicles may experience unnecessary waiting times.
  3. Congestion can increase during peak hours.
  4. Limited real-time traffic monitoring.
  5. Inefficient handling of uneven traffic across lanes.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses computer vision and AI-based vehicle detection to estimate traffic density in each lane. Based on the estimated number of vehicles and congestion levels, an adaptive signal-control algorithm allocates green-light duration dynamically. A dashboard provides real-time or simulated traffic statistics and signal status.

Key Features:

  1. Vehicle detection and counting using YOLO or similar models.
  2. Traffic density estimation for multiple lanes.
  3. Adaptive green-light timing.
  4. Congestion-level classification.
  5. Dashboard for monitoring traffic conditions.
  6. Traffic statistics and historical reports.
  7. Optional emergency-vehicle priority and multi-intersection coordination.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Data Collection: Collect traffic videos or images from public datasets or recorded intersection footage.
  2. Preprocessing: Resize video frames, select relevant road regions, and prepare the input for vehicle detection.
  3. Vehicle Detection: Apply a model such as YOLO to identify cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, and other supported vehicle classes.
  4. Vehicle Counting: Count detected vehicles in each lane or defined road region, using tracking where necessary to avoid repeated counts.
  5. Density Estimation: Calculate lane-level vehicle counts or occupancy and classify congestion into low, medium, and high levels.
  6. Signal-Control Algorithm: Develop rules that allocate green-light duration according to traffic density, while respecting minimum and maximum signal times and safe intersection phases.
  7. Dashboard Development: Build a web dashboard displaying vehicle counts, congestion levels, signal timings, and traffic summaries.
  8. Signal Simulation: Test adaptive signal control using simulated traffic or a traffic simulator such as SUMO.
  9. Testing and Evaluation: Compare the adaptive strategy with fixed-time control using average waiting time, queue length, throughput, and detection accuracy.
  10. Deployment: Run the system on a local computer or edge device. Physical traffic-signal integration should only be performed with authorized equipment and appropriate safety controls.
