Detail Description

1. Abstract

Transformer-Based Cyberbullying Detection is an Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) project designed to identify abusive, offensive, threatening, and harassing content in online communication. Social media platforms, discussion forums, and messaging applications generate large amounts of text, making manual moderation difficult. This project uses transformer-based language models such as BERT or RoBERTa to analyze contextual meaning and classify text as cyberbullying or non-cyberbullying. The system can also categorize harmful content into types such as insults, threats, hate speech, and personal attacks when suitable labeled training data is available. A web-based dashboard allows users to submit text, view prediction results, and review confidence scores. The proposed system supports automated content moderation and safer online communication.

2. Objectives

  1. Develop an automated cyberbullying detection system using transformer models.
  2. Identify abusive, offensive, and harassing text in online communication.
  3. Classify text as cyberbullying or non-cyberbullying.
  4. Categorize different forms of harmful online language.
  5. Understand contextual meaning using pretrained language models.
  6. Reduce the effort required for manual content moderation.
  7. Display prediction labels and confidence scores.
  8. Develop a dashboard for text analysis and moderation reports.

3. Existing System

Traditional cyberbullying detection systems rely on keyword matching, predefined dictionaries, and machine learning algorithms such as Naive Bayes, Logistic Regression, and Support Vector Machines. These approaches can identify certain offensive words but may struggle to understand context, sarcasm, indirect harassment, and changing online slang.

Disadvantages of the Existing System

  1. Keyword-based methods may miss indirect bullying.
  2. Harmless statements can be incorrectly flagged.
  3. Context and sarcasm are difficult to interpret.
  4. New slang and spelling variations reduce effectiveness.
  5. Traditional models may struggle with complex language patterns.
  6. Manual moderation is time-consuming for large volumes of content.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses a pretrained transformer model such as BERT or RoBERTa, fine-tuned on labeled cyberbullying datasets. The model processes user-submitted text, learns contextual relationships between words, and predicts whether the content contains cyberbullying or harmful language.

Depending on the dataset, the system can support binary classification or multi-class classification for categories such as insults, threats, harassment, and identity-based abuse. A dashboard displays the input text, predicted category, confidence score, and moderation status for human review.

Key Features

  1. Transformer-based text classification.
  2. Cyberbullying and non-cyberbullying detection.
  3. Optional multi-category harmful-content classification.
  4. Context-aware language analysis.
  5. Prediction confidence scores.
  6. Interactive text submission interface.
  7. Moderation history and summary reports.
  8. Optional human-review workflow for flagged content.

Note: Automated predictions can be wrong and should not be treated as definitive judgments about a person. Human review is recommended before taking consequential moderation actions.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection: Obtain a suitable labeled cyberbullying or online abuse dataset, such as a research dataset containing social media comments.
  2. Data Preparation: Remove duplicates, handle missing values, and standardize the target labels.
  3. Text Preprocessing: Clean unnecessary formatting while preserving meaningful words, punctuation, and contextual information.
  4. Dataset Splitting: Divide the data into training, validation, and test sets while preventing duplicate samples from leaking across splits.
  5. Model Selection: Select a pretrained transformer such as BERT or RoBERTa.
  6. Tokenization: Convert text into tokens, input IDs, and attention masks using the model's tokenizer.
  7. Model Fine-Tuning: Train the classification layer and fine-tune the transformer using labeled examples.
  8. Cyberbullying Prediction: Process input text and generate class probabilities.
  9. Category Classification: If supported by the dataset, classify content into categories such as insults, threats, or harassment.
  10. Dashboard Development: Build a web interface using Streamlit or Flask.
  11. Result Visualization: Display the predicted category, confidence score, and moderation recommendation.
  12. Performance Evaluation: Calculate accuracy, precision, recall, macro F1-score, and confusion matrix results.
  13. Testing: Test the model on unseen comments, slang, misspellings, sarcasm, and context-dependent language.
  14. Final Validation: Review false positives and false negatives to assess whether the model is suitable for the intended moderation workflow.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Programming Language: Python
  2. Development Environment: VS Code, PyCharm, or Jupyter Notebook
  3. NLP Libraries: Hugging Face Transformers, Tokenizers
  4. Deep Learning Framework: PyTorch or TensorFlow
  5. Pretrained Models: BERT or RoBERTa
  6. Data Processing: Pandas, NumPy
  7. Machine Learning: Scikit-learn
  8. Visualization: Matplotlib, Seaborn
  9. Dashboard: Streamlit or Flask
  10. Dataset: Labeled cyberbullying or online abuse text dataset
  11. Operating System: Windows or Linux

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Core i5 or equivalent and above
  2. RAM: Minimum 8 GB; 16 GB recommended
  3. Storage: At least 15–20 GB of free space, depending on dataset and model size
  4. GPU: NVIDIA GPU recommended for faster model fine-tuning
  5. VRAM: 6–8 GB or more recommended for smaller experiments, depending on model configuration
  6. Internet Connection: Required for downloading datasets, pretrained models, and libraries

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Automates the detection of potentially harmful online text.
  2. Uses contextual language understanding instead of relying only on keywords.
  3. Supports faster review of large volumes of comments.
  4. Can identify different categories of harmful content when properly trained.
  5. Helps prioritize content for human moderators.
  6. Provides measurable performance evaluation.
  7. Can be adapted to different online communities and languages.
  8. Supports research into responsible AI and safer online communication.
