Alzheimer’s Disease Classification is an AI-based healthcare project that uses machine learning, deep learning, and medical image analysis to classify data associated with different stages or categories of Alzheimer’s disease. Depending on the selected dataset, the system can analyze brain MRI images, PET scans, or other structured clinical features to identify predefined classes such as cognitively normal, mild cognitive impairment, or Alzheimer’s-related categories. CNN and transfer-learning models can automatically learn relevant patterns from medical images. The system is intended for research and AI-assisted analysis, not as a replacement for clinical diagnosis.
Alzheimer’s assessment generally involves clinical evaluation, cognitive assessments, medical history, neurological examination, and brain imaging, interpreted by qualified healthcare professionals.
The proposed system uses deep learning and medical image classification to analyze brain images or structured medical data and classify them according to the categories available in the selected dataset.
Workflow:
MRI/PET Image or Clinical Data → Preprocessing → Feature Extraction → Deep Learning/ML Model → Classification → Prediction Result
For medical images, possible models include:
For structured clinical datasets, possible models include:
The exact output classes should match the selected dataset, rather than assuming a particular clinical staging scheme.
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect an appropriate labeled Alzheimer’s dataset containing brain MRI/PET images or structured clinical information.
Step 2 – Data Preprocessing
For images:
For structured data:
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Feature Extraction
For medical images, CNN-based architectures automatically learn spatial features from brain scans. For structured data, relevant clinical and demographic features can be selected using statistical or machine-learning techniques.
Step 5 – Model Development
Develop a CNN/transfer-learning model for image classification or an ML model for structured data.
Step 6 – Model Training
Train the model using labeled data and validate it using an independent validation set.
Step 7 – Model Evaluation
Evaluate using:
For medical applications, sensitivity and specificity should be considered alongside accuracy.
Step 8 – Prediction
Allow the user to provide an MRI/PET image or supported clinical information and generate the predicted dataset category with an appropriate probability/confidence score.
Step 9 – Visualization
Display:
Explainable-AI methods such as Grad-CAM can optionally be used for image-based models to visualize regions influencing a prediction.
Step 10 – Deployment
Deploy the trained model using Streamlit or Flask for research and demonstration purposes.
